Soweto marks 50 years since the 1976 Uprising with four days of commemoration

Fifty years after the youth of Soweto changed the course of South African history, the country pauses to remember. A four-day commemorative programme from 13 to 16 June 2026 includes film screenings, heritage walks, a youth career expo, intergenerational dialogues and the symbolic 'Finish What Was Started' commemorative walk tracing the 1976 route. National Youth Day commemorations take place on 16 June under the theme RESET@50 — The Future Calls, with a Walk of Generations and a national event in Johannesburg. The anniversary connects the courage of 1976 to the responsibility of building today's South Africa.
